Happy Lunar New Year of the Rabbit

The South Granville BIA is excited to introduce Lunar New Year festivities to the neighbourhood! Explore Vancouver’s best district to treat yourself and check out a beautiful public space installation and lion dance performances while you’re here:

Festive Light Installation (mid-January to early February)
Red lanterns are symbols of wealth, fame, and prosperity and are a significant tradition for the Lunar New Year. The South Granville Plaza West located at Granville Street x West 13th Avenue will be adorned with beautiful red lanterns to drive off bad luck for the coming year and welcome visitors to the area.

Lion Dance Performance (January 29th, starting at 11:00 am)
The lion dance is a traditional Chinese dance performed during the Spring Festival  (Chinese New Year) to drive away all the negative energy and evil spirits and bring prosperity, wisdom, positivity, and liveliness. The dance is performed by two dancers inside an ornate lion costume accompanied by beating drums and clashing cymbals. The Vancouver Kung-Fu group, Bak Mei, established in 1972, will bless our neighbourhood on January 29th, 11:00 am, starting at South Granville Plaza East (Granville Street x West 14th Avenue).

We are excited to work with local groups to bring the festivities of the Lunar New Year to South Granville as one of our many vibrant programs.
