Construction: South Lane Utility Work

***NOTE PROVIDED BY THE BROADWAY SUBWAY PROJECT***

On March 13, utility work will begin in the laneway east of Granville Street between W. 10th Avenue and W. Broadway. This is the next phase of sequenced work to relocate utilities in the area, accommodating construction of the future South Granville Station. A map of the work area, including the present stages, timing and expected road closures, can be found below.

CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES

Starting March 13, Monday to Friday, for approximately 4 weeks:

  • Daytime work: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Focus is on preparation and identification of the existing utilities, excavation and backfilling.

  • Intermittent night work: 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Work includes excavation and installation of the temporary utilities.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Elevated and intermittent noise related to construction activities. We will aim to conduct the noisiest work before 10 p.m.

  • This work is sequential, so some activities will need to happen after 10 p.m. We will make every effort to minimize these occasions when possible.

  • Increased trucks, equipment and workers in the laneway east of Granville Street.

TRAFFIC

Temporary traffic restrictions in the laneway are expected for the duration of this work. Access to buildings and parkades adjacent to the laneway will be maintained.

  • Overnight closure of two lanes on W. Broadway between Granville and Hemlock streets March 17 to 19. This will include a pedestrian detour on the south side of W. Broadway, ensuring pedestrian access between Granville and Hemlock streets is maintained.

  • Daytime road closures on W. 10th Avenue between Granville and Hemlock streets March 24 to 26. Cyclists must dismount and walk their bikes along the north sidewalk to navigate around the area during this stage of work.

Preliminary Works: March 13-14.

  • Stage 1: Expected March 17-19. Associated traffic impacts on W. Broadway.

  • Stage 2: Expected March 24-26. Associated traffic impacts on W. 10th Avenue.

  • Following Stage 2, additional work in the north end of the laneway is expected. Exact dates and locations are to be determined based on the progress of sequenced work, and further updates will be provided.
